FG declares Friday May 29 as Public Holiday



The Federal Government has declared Friday May 29, 2015 as Public Holiday to celebrate the 2015 Democracy Day. The Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, who made the declaration on behalf of the Government urged Nigerians at home and the diaspora to support the incoming government and to pray for the success of Nigeria’s democratic process.

Moro also used the opportunity to congratulate President Goodluck Jonathan and Nigerians for the successful conduct of the 2015 general elections, as well as the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, on his electoral victory. Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan, has signed the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015 and the Immigration Act 2015 into laws. The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati disclosed this to state House Correspondents yesterday.
The Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015 which was passed into law by the Senate on the 4th of May, seeks to prohibit female circumcision or genital mutilation, forceful ejection from home and harmful widowhood practices. It also prohibits abandonment of spouse, children and other dependents without sustenance, battery and harmful traditional practices.
