The eighth session of the Ogun State House of Assembly was on Monday inaugurated as former Speaker, Suraj Adekunbi, got re-elected for another term expected to run till 2019.

The inauguration of the new assembly, which held at the chambers of the Assembly located at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, was done by the governor, Ibikunle Amosun, and witnessed by hundreds of supporters of the new lawmakers and their family members.
New principal officers were also elected at the inauguration which include; Kunle Oluomo(Deputy Speaker), Adeyinka Mafe(Majority Leader),Wale Alausa(Minority Leader), and Idowu Olowofuja(Chief Whip). In his speech, Governor Amosun told the lawmakers to see their election as a rare opportunity to lead and serve the people who have hopes on them to enjoy dividend of democracy, saying the 7th legislative has become history. “By your victories in the 2015 General Elections, history is presenting to you, either as returning Honourable Members or as newly elected Honourable Members, a rare opportunity to lead and serve the people who have placed hopes on you to enjoy the dividend of democracy,” he stated. “As the eighth Legislature, you must therefore realize that this opportunity to lead and serve our people also comes with its attendant challenges. First, for returning Honourable Members, you have a responsibility of ensuring that newly elected Honourable Members are quickly inducted into the practices, norms and conventions of the House”.
“I also enjoin the newly-elected members to ensure that you learn fast as there is little or no time to be spent in learning the ropes. Providence has been good to you that we have a sizeable number of returning Honourable Members,” Mr. Amosun said. “As I said during the governorship inauguration programme on 29th May, 2015, we have more work on our hands. In fact, the work at hand is more than what was done during our first term, as the people’s expectation is on the increase,” he added. At the end of the inauguration, the lawmakers returned to the chambers for their maiden plenary which lasted for about 10 minutes. At the brief session, four motions were raised, which include; Witnesses, False Evidence, Security Agencies and Votes Proceedings. The motion for adjournment was moved by Yinka Mafe and next sitting was scheduled for June 11, 2015.
