Saraki Becomes New Senate President, Ekweremadu Elected Deputy
Senator Bukola Saraki, ex-governor Kwara State governor and senator representing Kwara Central, has been elected as the new President of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Senator Ahmed Lawan(Borno), who emerged the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress, was not nominated.
Saraki (APC-Kwara Central) was elected unopposed by 57 of 108 Senators, with 51 Senators missing, Lawan among them.
The other senators were at the International Conference Centre at the time Saraki was declared President.
Immediate past Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, has been elected Deputy Senate President. He was nominated by Abie Sekibo from Rivers State. Ekweremadu is a member of the minority Peoples Democratic Party.
