Seven people were killed during the failed assassination attempt on Burundi's army chief of staff, Gen Prime Niyongabo early this morning. Deputy Police Chief Gen Godefroid Bizimana said that two attackers, four bodyguards and a female police officer were killed.
However, the army chief of staff survived the assassination attempt in the capital Bujumbura, according to police. He was heading to his office when men armed with guns and rockets attacked his motorcade just before 07:00 local time.
The attackers were dressed in army uniforms, a security source has told the AFP news agency. The source added that the would-be assassins were serving soldiers and that the attack was "meticulously prepared".
