10,000 Successful Police Applicants Begin Training

The 10,000 successful applicants into the Nigeria Police Force have started training on December 31, 2016 in various police colleges and training schools across the country. Mr Ikechukwu Ani, Public Relations Officer, Police Service Commission, PSC, who made this known, yesterday, in Abuja, said: “The decision is part of the fallout of the 18th plenary meeting of the commission in Abuja. “The 500 recruited Cadet Assistant Superintendents of Police will be trained for 12 months at the Police Staff College, Jos, Plateau State, while the 500 Cadet Inspectors will be at the Police College, Ikeja, Lagos for their training which will also last for 12 months.

The Police Service Commission has warned police officers on escort duty with Very Important Persons to desist from carrying their handbags and umbrellas, describing it as an insult to the Nigeria Police Force. The commission also said it would henceforth arrest police operatives on illegal escort duty, adding that its workers would soon be deployed in airports and on the highways to apprehend errant policemen.

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested one Alhaji Kabiru Akorede, a suspected car snatcher. The suspect said he could not count the number of stolen vehicles he has sold.

According to Punch, 42-year-old Akorede, was nabbed by operatives of the special Anti-Robbery Squad in his residence at NEPA Quarters, Isashi, Lagos. Akorede allegedly belonged to an eight-man robbery gang, who had gone to the Victoria Island area on September 12, 2014 and robbed one Mr. Albert Omisore of his Toyota Prado marked, AAA 690 BH.

Are you surprised? well I am too but here is the fact. The current Inspector General of Police, MD Abubakar has attained the mandatory age of service. Barring any last change of plan, the Federal Government is expected to announce Assistant Inspector-General of Police, in-charge of Zone 7, AIG Suleiman Abba, as a replacement for IGP Mohammed Abubakar

Findings indicated that President Goodluck Jonathan had conveyed to Abba the news of his appointment as the next IG, following his selection by the Police Council made up of the 36 state governors and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Mike Okiro.

A source in the Presidency said, “Abba would be announced any moment from now as the next IG; in fact, the appointment has been confirmed to him personally, all we are waiting for is the official announcement by the President which may be made after the FEC meeting on Wednesday.”

Abubakar, from Zamfara State, enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force on July 30, 1979 and was due for retirement on July 30, 2014, based on the mandatory retirement age.

Abubakar, who had attained the mandatory 35 years in service, was expected to proceed on terminal leave in the early days of the month, but he had clung on, hoping his tenure would be extended.

Punch had exclusively reported that IGP Abubakar would not be granted an extension of tenure in spite of his relative achievements in the Force and efforts by Vice President Namadi Sambo, to persuade Jonathan to extend his tenure till 2015.

The appointment of Abba as the next IG seems to have put paid to Sambo’s alleged promise and assurances to Abubakar and his dream of staying in office till after the general elections.

Investigations showed that it was only the tenure of former IG Sunday Ehindero that was extended by one year by the administration of Olusegun Obasanjo.

Abba, whose appointment may be announced on Wednesday after the Federal Executive Council meeting, had served as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State; Deputy Force Secretary and Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of State CID, FCT Police Command, etc.

One of the suspects, Lawal Kabir whose eyelids blink momentarily like a doll in the old Kingsway Store claims to be a devout Muslim and considers only Fridays and the Ramadan period as sacred days in the whole year when he thinks he should not engage in armed robbery.

These days, especially Fridays, he said, he would go to the mosque to pray to God to forgive all his criminal tendencies only to continue his devilish acts thereafter. In fact, the suspect said he was arrested on Friday after observing the Jumat prayers.

Given their looks, one needed no soothsayer to discern that the suspects had carried out numerous deadly attacks on their victims even though they admitted to have participated in no fewer than four successful robbery operations.

According to them, they had made people cry in places like Osun, Sawmill, Iyana-Agbala and other places when they unleashed terror on them. Knowing their days of reckoning had finally come, the eight-man gang confessed some of the crimes they had committed.

Ayodele Olaitan, who wore a mask, one of the tools they use in their nefarious activities shook his head in regret and told Vanguard

“It was my friends that pushed me into this. I joined the gang sometime ago and I have participated in at least three robbery operations.I am not the owner of the mask you see on me. It belongs to one of us called pastor. He is dead now. I regret all my actions. I didn’t realize we could be caught. But, now the game is up, “ he said as he burst into tears.

Like other criminals, Lawal Kabir said he was pushed into the criminal world as a result of an unsuccessful business venture. 

“I took to robbery when my plumbing work was not booming. Three years after my freedom as an apprentice, I tried all I could to make both ends meet, but things did not work for me. I first stayed in Lagos before I later came to Ibadan where I was introduced to a gang of armed robbers. 

I have participated in four armed robbery attacks.I went with them to Osun State, Ibadan, Sawmill and Iyana -Agbala. I was arrested on Friday after I finished praying in the mosque. Somebody we call a pastor,also a member of the gang called me without knowing the police had already arrested him.  

I don’t rob on Fridays and during Ramadan. I used those periods to pray to God to forgive me my sins. I know what I was doing was wrong but it was difficult for me to break away from it.”

Another member of the gang, Biola Alaba who wore a weave-on hairdo said they were eight in number and that they were arrested at a drinking joint while preparing to carry out a robbery operation at Bodija area of the city. He denied ever killing any of their victims.

“How can I commit two sins at the same time. I cannot rob and kill at the same time. It is unfair to rob someone of his belongings and kill him. We don’t even rape our victims, “ 

As for Sunday Omooba from Ogbomoso who says he is a member of the Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, he narrated how he took charge of the armoury for the gang

 “I helped them get bullets through one man. I just call the man any time I need bullets for the gang.I don’t rob with them. 

In fact, I did not know that they were using the bullets to rob. I also supplied that pump action gun to them. I bought the gun for N70,000 from a friend. If I knew that they would use the weapons for robbery, I would not give them.”

The Investigating Police Officer in charge of the case alleged that Omooba supplied the pump action gun and killed the owner of the gun so that he could get the gun from him and did not give the money he promised to give him.

Inspector General of police Abubakar Accused of Massive Fraud

A human rights group named Paths of Peace has accused Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Mohammed D. Abubakar, of defrauding police officers of billions of naira in a dubious investment scam.

 

In a petition to the Senate, the group demanded that IGP Abubakar be probed over the alleged multi-billion-naira scheme that affects every policeman in the country.  Paths of Peace, a non-governmental organization that wrote the petition, stated that its objective was to fight for the rights of the oppressed.  

The petition, which was submitted to various Senate Committees, including the Committee on Petition and Privileges and the House Committee on Diaspora, alleged that IGP Abubakar deducts N11,000 from each police officer’ account each month. The petition stated that the deductions are part of a scam perpetrated through the so-called “mechanized salary section” (MSS).  

The measure allows police authorities to cut the salaries of officers and to divert the deductions into what is called a mortgage bank called Fokas Savings and Loans Limited...

According to Sahara Reporters, the petition disclosed that the deductions were purportedly to be used to buy shares for all police officers. However, none of the officers ever received any certificates or documents detailing the ownership of shares or the size of their shares.

PoP’s spokesman, Dandy Eze, stated that the Senate had previously ordered the IG to stop the illegal deductions from officers’ salaries. Mr. Eze disclosed that Mr. Abubakar had not heeded the Senate’s order.

PoP urged the Senate to intervene and to prevail on the Inspector General to stop making more deductions and also to refund what he had so far deducted from police officers’ accounts.

Nigerian Police Commandant Found Dead On His Bed

The commandant of the Nigeria Police Training School, Iperu, Ogun State, A.C.P. Kayode Adewoye was on Tuesday found dead on his bed. Adewoye who resided at the Police Officers’ Quarters, GRA, Ikeja, Lagos State was said to be a diabetic patient.

  It was gathered that the night before his death, Adewoye had taken his kids out for a treat and later went to bed, only to be found dead the next day. One of his family members had gone to his room to check on him only to discover his lifeless body on bed.

ACP Adeoye joined the Police Force as a Cadet in 1990. He studied Theatre Arts at the University of Ilorin and was the chairman of University of Ilorin Kegites’ Club for the 1985/86 session.

Graphic Photo: Police Brutality Has Led To The Killing Of A Bus Driver & A Police Inspector In Ogun State

Police brutality and jungle justice has led to the killing of a bus driver whom police killed and tagged as a smuggler and a police inspector who was killed by the angry mob fighting against the unjustifiable killing of the bus driver.

 According to Punch,

The violence that erupted between the youths of Oke-Odan community in Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State and security agents in the area last Monday has left two persons dead. Irate youths in the town had allegedly engaged policemen and operatives of the state anti-crime military security outfit, Operation MESA in an exchange of fire over the killing of a member of the community, Yinka Falola. 

The violence which had lasted three days culminated in the alleged reprisal killing of a police Inspector, Kolapo Lasisi, on Wednesday by some youths who also burnt two police vehicles and vandalised twelve others. Eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent that violence broke out on Monday afternoon when a police officer attached to the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos, Inspector Olusesan Sounde, allegedly shot and killed 30-year-old Falola. 

According to the eyewitness, the FED-SARS inspector had allegedly slapped Falola who was on a motorcycle on his way from the farm. Falola was said to have retaliated, infuriating the police inspector who allegedly cocked his rifle and shot him. After firing the shot, the alleged killer policeman was said to have insisted that Falola was a smuggler.

“Yinka (Falola) was never a smuggler, he was a commercial driver. He had altercations with one of the SARS men and the policeman slapped him. He retaliated and the policeman fired at close range killing him instantly,” the source said. 

Falola’s death immediately triggered the reprisal by the youths of Oke–Odan who mobilised themselves to the police checkpoint where they violently protested the killing.

Soldiers attached to Operation MESA who raced to the scene were also alleged to have been attacked by the angry youths, resulting in another shoot-out between them and the security agencies. 

The rampaging youths were said to have then marched down to the SARS check point where they burnt two police vehicles and vandalised 12 others at the Oke–Odan police station. Another round of the crisis which broke out on Wednesday was said to have resulted in the alleged killing of a police inspector, Kolapo Lasisi. Lasisi was said to have got trapped in a swamp while attempting to escape from the rampaging youths who allegedly caught up with him and hacked him to death. 

The state Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the incident said the police inspector was killed by the angry youths. Adejobi stated that the youths launched a nocturnal raid on the SARS check point where they killed the police inspector, buried him in the swamp and took away his rifle. 

The police spokesman also disclosed that the state Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye visited the town on Wednesday where he held a meeting with the traditional ruler of the community over the crisis. Adejobi further disclosed that the inspector who killed Falola had already been arrested and detained at the command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, while the corpse of the slain inspector had been exhumed from the swamp. He added, “The family of the late Falola as well as that of the slain inspector are demanding justice. We will ensure that justice is done, especially when the rifle of the inspector is still missing. We must recover the rifle and we must get it as well as the man who killed the inspector.”
