"Covenant University will be among World's top 10 University by 2022" -Bishop Oyedepo Reveals..

The Chancellor of Covenant University, Ota, Ogun, Dr David Oyedepo, said on Monday that the institution would be among the top 10 universities in the world by 2022.
Oyedepo made the remark at the institution's 11th Founder's Day celebration in Ota.

According to him, the university has since inception in 2002, focused on actualising its mandate, which is primarily to raise leaders who will change the world.

Oyedepo said that already, the university had surpassed set standards but was not relenting till it achieved its desired 2022 dream, tagged: Vision 10: 2022, (1 of 10 in 10).
"It is in view of this that we are launching our new vision and, therefore want to charge the faculty managements to invest maximally in the review of our curriculum.

"We must strive to review pragmatically, the contents of our curriculum by bringing it into the realities of the day.
"Let us not be afraid of trying out new things in new ways because unless this is done, you cannot move forward.
"We must strive to have the creative mind of Christ to review our curriculum in order to truly meet the needs of the society," he said.

The Chancellor said that empowering the people intellectually and practicalising it through inventions and discoveries was key in taking universities to higher levels.
He charged the students to be excellent performers, especially in the area of self-discipline, as it was a major tool in becoming great leaders.

The chancellor later inaugurated projects in the institution, among which was the vision 10:2022 (1 of 10 in 10) billboard.
He also inaugurated the glass blowing laboratory at the chemistry department of the institution as part of activities lined up for the celebration.
The laboratory is meant for fabricating, moulding and re-moulding of glass.

The Head of Department of Chemistry, Dr Kolawale Ajanaku, said that the laboratory would enable students to turn waste to wealth by picking up broken glasses and putting them into use.
He said that the laboratory would not serve the students alone but would be open to members of the public for training.
Covenant University, which was established on Oct. 21, 2002, has graduated more than 10, 000 students. (NAN)

UniJos Undergraduates Steal N2B Electronically From Union Bank

Officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested two young men identified as Isaiah Friday and Azzaior Samuel for allegedly defrauding a bank the sum of N2.05b. The suspects who claimed to be undergraduates of the University of Jos and two bureau de change operators, Salihu Mahmoud and Dan Ibrahim, connived to commit the criminal act.The suspects were also accused of being members of a syndicate that specialised in breaking into thecomputer data base of financial institutions to carry out dry posting of funds... The Head, Media and Publicity, EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, said the suspects were arrested in Lagos and Jos. Their arrest comes on the heels of a petition which the commission received from Union Bank of Nigeria Plc, Marina, Lagos, in January 2013, alleging that a criminal attack had been launched on its data base known as ‘Flexcube’, by yet-to-be-identified criminals who falsified the bank records and accounts and created unjustified huge opening balances in several accounts across the bank’s branches. They subsequently transferred funds from those accounts to several accounts in other banks. The petition, which was signed by one A.F Olufade, Head of Fraud Investigation at the bank, said cash withdrawals and electronic transfers totalling N2.05bn was involved in the scam. It was learnt that EFCC initial investigation showed that Friday, who was carrying out computer system maintenance services for one of the Union Bank branches in Jos, Plateau State, on a part-time basis, paved the way for the fraudsters to penetrate the bank’s database. Uwujaren said, Friday was traced and arrested. His arrest led to the arrest of Azaaior Samuel. Investigations further revealed that Samuel introduced Friday to Mahmoud, who is the mastermind of the fraud with others now at large. Mahmoud and other collaborators told Friday that they needed access to the bank’s database in order to carry out some postings. They promised to give Friday N.5m if the deal succeeded. Friday agreed. On the day the crime was committed, he told people at the bank that Samuel was his colleague who had accompanied him to work. It was learnt that after the gang had succeeded in gaining access to the bank’s premises, it carried out the postings to six different company accounts domiciled in Union Bank’s Marina branch in Lagos. The accounts are Gona Bureau De Change Limited, Jaxmine Bureau De Change Limited, Dan Kawu Bureau De Change Limited, Godswill Great Communications, ZHG Services Limited and A and B Console Limited. The postings were carried out and the syndicate thereafter went to the bank to withdraw all the funds. Friday was paid as promised and other syndicate members now at large shared the remaining balance. The EFCC spokesman added that the commission had been able to recover $2,129,900 and another N134,542, from the fraudsters. Other items recovered are furniture worth N10m from Salihu Liman’s one bedroom apartment in Yaba, Lagos; four vehicles, landed properties in Kano and Kaduna and a four-bedroom duplex worth N45m in Lagos. Empty threats? NANS threatens to shut down private universities.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) yesterday, protested in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State capital, and threatened to shut down activities in the private universities in the country if the Federal Government failed to comply with the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the strike lingered.

The students who displayed several placards with various inscriptions, lambasted the Federal Government for its failure to honour the agreement it entered into with ASUU since 2009.

Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Asafon Sunday, Director of Action and Mobilisation NANS, South–West, claimed between 2000 and 2011 the Nigerian government earned about N48.48 trillion from the sale of oil alone, against N3.10 trillion earned between 1979 and 1999

He said the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, in 2012 financial year alone generated N5.12 trillion from tax paid by the masses.

According to him: “With this tremendous upswing in the revenue at the disposal of the Nigerian government, one would have expected such to translate to commensurate improvement in the quality of Nigeria’s public education as well as other social services.”

He condemned the refusal of Federal Government to budget a reasonable amount of money to education sector as recommended by UNESCO which is 26 per cent of the country’s total budget.

Sunday noted that some countries with smaller Gross Domestic Product, GDP, like Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Kenya, Morocco and Botswana had budgetary allocations to education sector as follow, 31 per cent,20 per cent,23 per cent ,17.7 per cent and 19 per cent respectively to 8.5 per cent that Nigeria government had budgeted for education in 2013.

Also speaking, Steven Adara ,a student leader from Ekiti State University, EKSU , lamented that government officials and prominent Nigerians were not bothered about the crisis in the public universities because their children were in private schools overseas.

According to him: “We will mobilise and disrupt academic activities in the private universities because it is the sons and daughters of the rich that are in these schools.”

Female Student Found Dead Unclad In Ebonyi State University Hostel

 

 

Lifeless body of female student of Ebonyi State University,

Abakaliki, Miss Miracle Eze was found unclad in her hostel room at the Ishieke campus of the institution.

The deceased, who was in her second year in the Department of Mass Communication, hailed from Nsukka in Enugu State. She was said to havedied mysteriously in her room.

Her hostel mates found her lifeless body in her room at Henriv Hostel the next day when one of them noticed that she had not come out of her roomlater in the day.
On inquiry after knocking on her door and there was no response, she found out that it was locked from inside. According to the source, the situation attracted the attention of other students, and the police who later forced the door open and found her lifeless body on her bed.

One of the hostel mates, who did not want her name in print, told usthat the deceased was a close friend but was not aware that the deceased (Miracle) was sick, saying that they were together some hours earlier on the night she died.
However, she stated that the deceased had told her of one Mohammed who had insisted on dating her, adding that the deceased cried while telling her about the man's love advances. She said: "Miracle cried when she met me in my room the same night she died and complained about one Mohammed, whom, she said, had been a threat to her life.

She told me that Mohammed's love advances had been a threat to her and she could no longer bear to see Mohammed's face in her room. "While I was with her, the same Mohammed came in and she left for her room.
The following morning as I was preparing for school, I knocked on her door but nobody responded. I thought maybe, she was praying and I left for my exam." Other residents of the hostel told our correspondent that they sensed something was wrong when they noticed that the girl's door was still locked from inside until in the evening when they raised the alarm and knocked hard on the door but to no avail.

The students stated that it was when they called her phone and it rang but was not picked, that they peeped through the window and saw her body on her bed, dead and unclad. The police at Ishieke later deposited her corpse in the mortuary while further investigation continues.
