OJB’s widow calls out celebrities to celebrate 2nd anniversary of his death

Korede Okungbowa, third wife of late Nigerian legendary music producer OJB Jezreel ,has called on his industry colleagues to help in celebrating the anniversary of his death. OJB passed away in 2016 following a protracted battle with kidney failure.

Babatunde Okungbowa, a Nigerian music producer and singer popularly known as OJB is reportedly on admission at the General Hospital, Lagos following a relapse of his kidney ailment.

 To be frank, I didn't even know that music producer OJB Jezreel had three wives until his Kidney story. In an interview with Punch , he says he never planned to have three wives and he won't advice anyone to marry three wives. excerpts:

Would it be correct to say you now have more affection for the wife that donated her kidney to you more than the others?

Definitely. In fact, affection is not even the word to use. I don’t even know what to say. She just did it. It wasn’t as if she was supposed to do it. I was shocked. I just look at her and I don’t say a word. I am not the kind of person who feels that she must donate her kidney because I am her husband, no. Such decisions should come naturally. Right now, I have more than affection for her.

Your health challenge opened up a whole lot about your personal life; most people didn’t even know you had more than one wife and may be still counting…

I have reached the bus stop, there is no other wife coming.

Was it by choice or design that you have three wives?

It is everything. But predominantly, I think it is by design. Some people believe in destiny while some others don’t. I think it was destined to happen. I believe in destiny. I don’t think I would have survived it if it weren’t destined to be. People get shocked that I have three wives because I don’t live like somebody who has three wives. Come to think of it, there is no particular way to live life. Am I supposed to wear three shirts because I have three wives? I don’t even advise people to have three wives and when I talk about it, they are shocked.

But you married three?

Oh yes I did. When I was growing up, I even said I was not going to get married. I said I would just have children. But see, it is not the same story now. I just feel it is destiny.

Don’t you regret it?

There is no regret. Initially, you would tell yourself that if you had one wife, this would have happened or that would have happened if you didn’t. But then again, you have to check and understand that life is in stages. I am appreciating life the way it is. Out of the marriages, I have eight beautiful children. When I look at them, I am happy. They are my investment.

Was it fame that made you to marry three wives?

I don’t think it has anything to do with fame. There are people without fame yet they married more than three wives. Those people are not even rich. I think it is destiny; there is no other way to explain it.

OJB sets up Kidney Foundation

 Music producer Babatunde Okungbowa aka OJB has set up a kidney related foundation that would focus on helping kidney patients in the country. OJB who is still recuperating from a Kidney transplant he had last year in India spoke with Encomium magazine about the Foundation
"It would be called OJB Foundation. We are trying to set up one or more dialysis centers which patients will use at highly affordable cost. To this end we are discussing with partners who would make this happen. We are about to start the programme. We don't just want to be begging for funds. We have to look for a sustainable format. So we want to start a Save 20 campaign. From there, we move on with the support of the private sector, Government and Non Governmental Organizations, NGO" OJB said. OJB also said he is currently working on his new album which is expected to drop in June.

“My wife is a courageous and wonderful woman” OJB's first interview after his successful surgical operation!

After the surgery in India, OJB had every reason to smileHow would you describe your wife, who volunteered to donate one of her kidneys?

I will say she is a wonderful person because it is one thing if God is telling you to do something but another to do it. It takes a lot of courage to actually do it. Just as Jesus had made the water for Peter to walk on, Peter needed a lot of courage to take that step and that was what she did at that dying minute. Even when the doctors came to tell her that they would have to cut her all the way to the back and would have to remove a rib so they could have access to the kidney and if after that you still go ahead to do it then that is serious courage. I will say she is a courageous woman.

When are you hoping to get back to work?
I guess my first work is going to be with P. Square. Hopefully we'll be doing something as soon as possible, and then mix some of my old songs. Using my experience to help people is another thing I want to do and very soon I'll start a foundation.

What lesson has this experience taught you?
It's more spiritual really. I see it as, anybody that has God should be anxious for nothing', because he has you in mind, you might think He doesn't but He does. It has changed my whole perspective now.
His wife, Mama J says "I gave my kidney because if he is alive, it is for my own good. So there is nothing to it, I didn't see it as anything from day one, I asked God to help me and give me the courage and He did. Every step, every process was difficult because a lot of things they told me were enough for me to say I wasn't doing again. If I should think about the cut, the pain affects some people psychologically because it goes to your brain and you can easily go mad if you are not strong enough. Even till now I still feel the pain, there are some positions you cannot sleep like you can't sleep on your right side for too long, you can't sleep on your left or face up. I still feel the pain but now it's not the pain but the joy that everything is ok that keeps me going."

Did you face challenges from your family at all?
OH…of course I did. My brothers were like no oh you are not going to do it, my mum didn't even talk to me. My dad was like what do we do, even if we tell you not to do it you will still go ahead, so let's not waste time. It's not just the fact that it's OJB; he is my husband, the father of my children. I don't know the reason I will not give him, there's no reason I shouldn't give him if I am the perfect match for it.
