Presidency Has Ordered Police To Arrest Emir Sanusi Lamido

Information coming from Kano is very troubling as the Presidency is said to be taking its desperation to far this time. The Nigerian police have been ordered to arrest the newly-crowned Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi on fraud-related charges stemming from his tenure as Governor of the CBN.

According to reliable sources at the Presidency in Abuja, the team of policemen at the Emir’s palace in Kano had received the order from the Nigeria Police headquarters in Abuja to place Emir Sanusi under arrest if and when he leaves the Kano State Governor’s lodge for the palace.

Already top northern leaders who have gotten wind of the wicked plan have warned President Jonathan to avoid such a reckless action for his good but the question is, will he listen?

Sources told Sahara Reporters that Emir Sanusi was to be arrested at his private home on Sunday night after his appointment was announced by the Kano State Governor but the move was frustrated. It would be recalled that the presidency embarked on several frantic measures to frustrate his emergence as Emir, including the premature congratulations by PDP to one of the candidates before the choice was announced.

Heavy Tension Spread in Kano as Jonathan "Reversed" Sanusi’s Appointment As Emir

The story spreading in the town is that the new Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, is about to be arrested and detained on the orders from above as the President, Goodluck Jonathan, has decided to reverse Sanusi's appointment immediately.

“This whole rumor was calculated to cause a new set of rioting in Kano,” said the source. He said Jonathan and his cronies had designed a plot to create destabilization in Kano in order to give a pretext to declare a state of emergency in Kano in the high populated state under the control of APC.

The emergence of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the new Emir of Kano was political and traditional, sources have told OCB. The PDP was wishing that the governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso should pick any of the other contenders for the throne but certainly not Sanusi. The APC wished for Sanusi.

In fact, PDP was so much in a hurry to see that Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the former CBN Governor, does not by any chance become the Emir of Kano that they rushed to the media to congratulate a wrong Emir.

Funny enough, PDP has withdrawn the congratulatory message but they are yet to congratulate the REAL Emir after over 12 hours of Sanusi's emergence as the 57th Emir of Kano. This is enmity taken too far.

  The new Emir of Kano, HRH Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi 

He was born on July 31, 1961 in Kano, northern Nigeria. He obtained Bachelors’ degrees in Economics first from Ahmadu Bello University, and Islamic Law later from the International University of Africa, Khartoum.

After being an Economics lecturer for two years at the ABU, he started a banking career in 1985 with the Icon Limited (Merchant Bankers) a subsidiary of Morgan Guaranty Trust Bank of New York, and Baring Brothers of London.

He later joined the United Bank for Africa Plc in 1997, and worked in the Credit and Risk Management Division of the bank from where he rose to the position of a General Manager in 2005.

He thereafter joined the board of the First Bank of Nigeria Plc, as an Executive Director in charge of Risk and Management Control, and was appointed Group Managing Director of the Bank in 2009. Sanusi thus emerged in January 2009 as the first northerner to be appointed as the Chief Executive Officer in First Bank’s history of more than a century.

Although Sanusi’s banking career spanned various fields which included financial advisory services and credit marketing, it was in the field of risk management that he earned his professional reputation, distinguishing himself as the Chief Risk Officer in two prominent banks in the \country, UBA Plc and FBN Plc.
On June 3, 2009 after only six months as First Bank’s CEO, he was appointed the 10th Governor of the CBN in the middle of a global financial crisis with the banking system on the verge of collapse.

He was awarded the National Honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger by President Goodluck Jonathan on July 22, 2010. He was also admitted into the fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria.

Sanusi’s father, Muhammad Lamido Sanusi was a technocrat who served as the Permanent Secretary of Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs after serving as Nigerian Ambassador to Canada, Belgium and China. He is also the grandson of the 11th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi. Sanusi is married and blessed with children.

According to Punch, in his tenure as CBN governor, the apex bank moved swiftly to implement far-reaching and commendable reforms in the banking industry which were aimed at addressing the causes of the crisis.

A joint audit exercise carried out by Central Bank and the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation revealed that eight out of the 24 deposit money banks in the country were in a grave situation. He rescued the banks.

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi could be the next Emir of Kano

Things just got tighter for President Goodluck Jonathan: former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi (SLS), is a potential candidate to be the next emir of Kano after the death of Alhaji Ado Bayero.

Kano is considered strategic in the 2015 presidential election ─ in which Jonathan is expected to run ─ because of its voting population.

Even 25% of Kano’s 5.1 million registered voters ─ second only to Lagos’ 6.2 million ─ could make a significant contribution to the overall score of a presidential candidate.

 

With Lagos not currently considered a good hunting ground for Jonathan, Kano ─ already an uphill task for the president, despite former governor Ibrahim Shekarau’s defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ─ could become more hostile with Sanusi as emir.

The state governor, Malam Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is a sworn opponent of Jonathan and was one of the five governors who left the PDP ─ to which the president belongs ─ for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in November last year.

With the death of Bayero on Friday morning after 50 years on the throne, Sanusi is clearly a contender to replace him.

The other strong contender is Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Ado Bayero, the Ciroman Kano, who, as the first son of Bayero, is often addressed as the Crown Prince.

He was born on April 1, 1956 and is older than the former CBN governor by five years.

The late Bayero was believed to be sympathetic to Jonathan and not on good terms with Kwankwaso. His palace was attacked by a mob who accused him of “selling out” after Jonathan was declared the winner of the 2011 presidential election.

The power to appoint Bayero’s successor lies with Kwankwaso, based on the recommendation of the kingmakers.

Sanusi, the only CBN to engage the Nigerian president in an open confrontation, was suspended in February after writing a controversial letter to Jonathan to draw attention to billions of dollars that had not been accounted for by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

He is still in court to challenge his suspension although a new governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has assumed office.

Sanusi has openly said he would like to be the emir of Kano “one day” and once told journalists that his decision to study Arabic and Islamic studies at a Sudanese university was part of his preparations for the throne.

His grandfather, Muhammadu Sanusi, was emir of Kano from 1953-1963. He was the eldest brother of the emir who just died.

Sanusi was deposed in 1963 after falling out with his distant cousin, the Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello, who was the premier of the old northern region.

Sanusi’s replacement, Alhaji Muhammad Inuwa, lasted only three months before his death, and Bayero was enthroned.

The former CBN governor, who is close to Kwankwaso, is married to one of Bayero’s daughters.

How Sanusi Defeated SSS & Presidency, Gets N50m

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Thursday awarded N50million damages to suspended and attacked Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, for the violation of his rights by FG. In his ruling, Justice Ibrahim Buba stated that his arrest and detention as well as the seizure of his international passport by security agencies acting for the Federal Government violated his right. The judge has consequently ordered the State Security Service (SSS) and the police to release Sanusi’s passport immediately. Justice Buba dismissed allegation of terrorism financing as basis for arresting Sanusi and seizing his passport. He described the "fake" allegation as an afterthought.

The judge said: “An order is made restraining the respondents, their agents, privies, representatives or other law enforcement agencies of the government of the federation from further interference with or violation of the applicant’s right to personal liberty, freedom of movement and right to personal liberty.” Both respondents are to pay the N50million to Sanusi as exemplary damages for unlawfully detaining him and seizing his passport. Apart from the damages, the judge also ordered FG and SSS to “jointly and severally” issue a public apology to Sanusi for the “unlawful arrest, harassment, intimidation, withdrawal and seizure of his passport.”

The plot to silence the suspended Governor of CBN, Mallam Sanusi Lamido, at all cost has assumed a sad and frightening dimension. Few weeks after President Goodluck Jonathan's aide on New Media, Reno Omokri, was caught in the act of publishing false information online with a fake name - Wendel Simlin - another plot is now in motion to link Sanusi with the same allegations that Reno Omokri published. The Federal Government and the State Security Service have accused Mallam Sanusi, of financing terrorism in the counter-affidavits they deposed to before a Federal High Court which is hearing a suit by Sanusi. The ex-CBN chief is seeking a perpetual injunction to restrain the SSS and the police from arresting him. Reacting to the latest development, Sanusi’s lawyer, Kola Awodein, said:

“The seizure of the applicant’s international passport by the third respondent, is a violation of his freedom of movement. The first to third respondents give conflicting reasons as to the complaint made against the applicant: This conflict goes to show that they acted without due process of the law. “The allegation against the applicant as to funding of terrorism, is an afterthought by the respondents, which is not backed by facts, as there is no reasonable suspicion that the applicant committed any crime.

Finally, Sanusi Sues Jonathan Over ‘Illegal’ Suspension

President Goodluck Jonathan Ousted Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has finally concretised his threat to sue President Goodluck Jonathan over his removal as head of the bank last week.
According to a suit filed at a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja late on Monday, Sanusi is challenging his suspension from office; and he has implored the court to, among others, restrain the president — alongside Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) — from giving effect to his suspension, pending the determination of his lawsuit. He is also seeking an order of interlocutory injunction restraining the defendants from obstructing, disturbing, stopping or preventing him in any manner, from performing the functions of his office and enjoying in full, the statutory powers and privileges attached to the office of the governor of the CBN.
 Making a case for the reasons why the court should grant the prayers in his interlocutory application, he said the president’s unlawful interference with the management and administration of the CBN can only be left unaddressed at the expense of the country’s economy. Granting his application, he argued, will encourage parties to maintain the status quo until the determination of the substantive case.

In a supporting affidavit, Sanusi maintained that his suspension is the consequence of his outcry over the $20bn in crude oil sales that was unremitted by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). He explained that while performing his duties as Governor of CBN, he discovered certain discrepancies in respect of amounts repatriated to the federation account from the proceed of crude oil sales between the period of January 2012 and July 2013.

He said he expressed concerns about the said discrepancies and went ahead to notify the National Assembly, considering its huge effect on revenue of the federation and the national economy. His suspension, he insisted, is aimed at punishing him for the disclosures.

Sanusi stated clearly that he was challenging the president’s power to suspend him from office, especially as the Senate was not approached to ratify the decision.

“I have been informed, and I verily believe the information given to me by Senator Bukola Saraki to be true and correct that the Senate did not give the president any support for my purported suspension and removal from office as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria”, a part of the document read.

He described his suspension as a contravention of provisions of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act relating to the appointment and removal of the CBN Governor. He therefore branded the act an unlawful interference in the administration and management of the apex bank, which is illegal, null and void.

President Goodluck Jonathan suspended Sanusi Lamido as CBN Governor on 20th February 2014, claiming reliance on a report of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN) that indicted the governor of “financial recklessness and misconduct”.

But the widespread belief is that Sanusi’s suspension was triggered by his well-documented outspokenness, particularly his recent revelation of NNPC’s failure to remit $20bn in crude oil sales to the federation account.

During his presidential media chat yesterday, Jonathan claimed that Sanusi remains the governor of CBN, yet the president nominated both an Acting Governor and a substantive replacement for Sanusi exactly on the day his suspension was announced.

Yes, I Have Absolute Power, I Can Suspend Sanusi ––Jonathan

Contrary to the Constitution of the country, President Goodluck Jonathan, on Monday claimed that he has all the powers to suspend Mallam Sanusi Lamido as governor of Central Bank, saying he acted in connection with alleged corruption charges against Sanusi with regards to the running of the CBN under him.
peaking during a media chat anchored by Imoni Amarere of AIT and others, that lasted 75minutes, he spoke on issues raging from the suspension of Sanusi as governor of the CBN. The president also addressed issues on defections by governors and senators from the PDP; the resurgence of Boko Haram attacks in the country, his 2015 presidential bid and the controversies surrounding subsidy on kerosene.

 Where did you get the power to suspend the CBN governor?

“The issue of the Central Bank is quite unfortunate but I will respond based on the issues you raised. Forget whether it is Goodluck Jonathan; it is whether the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has powers to suspend the governor of CBN. I will tell you, yes, the President has absolute powers to suspend the CBN governor. CBN is not even well defined in the Nigerian constitution. If you look at the Nigerian constitution, section 153, talks about executive bodies like Federal Character Commission, Civil Service Commission, Judicial Service Commission, about 14 of them, the code of conduct, these are clearly defined and it says that the President appoints, but must clear with the National Assembly.

For the President to remove anybody, the president must go through Senate. CBN as the number one bank is not even well defined in the Nigerian constitution, but CBN law makes the provision that to appoint the governor, deputy governors, and the non-executive directors, the President appoints and sends to Senate but the President has oversight functions over cbn. But if somebody tells you that the CBN is a different country, it is not true because for the cbn governor to change the colour of the Naira, the President must approve and for the CBN account to be even published, the President must approve.

Sanusi is still the governor of CBN and people must know that and that is why there can never be a substantive governor until the issue is sorted out. Sanusi could come back tomorrow to continue his work because the issues raised are issues that the board of CBN with the Financial Reporting Counicl, the authority that has the power to look into the financial transactions of CBN will deal with.

“The issue of suspension came in because the CBN Act is somewhat anomalous. We have similar situations where the CBN governor is also the chairman of the board. The CBN governor is the chief executive of CBN and at the same time is chairman of the CBN board; so if there are allegations about the CBN governor, it becomes a problem for you to look into it. And there were issues raised based on the 2012 audit report and for you to look into those issues, for you to be sure of what you are doing, the CBN governor should just step aside.

Immediately the board and the Financial Reporting Council sorts out those grey areas, and if it does not affect him, he would come back to do his work. So, you cannot say now that you are going to Senate to ask for powers to suspend, then maybe in one week or so, if the board of the Financial Reporting Council… then you go back to the Senate, this man is coming back, no.

“It is when you want to remove the governor completely. Assuming that the board of CBN and Financial Reporting Council look into those grey areas and feel that the infractions are grave enough for Sanusi to leave completely, then I will have to go to Senate no matter the issues they raise. I cannot say that I am firing him, it is the Senate. So, I can place those issues before the Senate and if the Senate agrees with the report, and says yes, then he can leave. The issue of suspension and removal are quite different.”

Defections of governors
“I will prefer we do not go to that area to market my party. I want to use this platform to comment on contemporary issues. I believe one thing very clearly - that we are elected by Nigerians and the days when Mr President, Mr governor or Mr Senator imposes his will on Nigerians is over. Nigerians have been made to understand that their votes count.

The issue is that if the governor is doing very well, the people will definitely follow him, but if the people do not believe in him, they will go with their votes.”

Are you contesting and when are you going to declare your interest?
“If I tell you I am not contesting, there will be issues and if I say I am contesting, there will be issues. I know the political environment is hot now but at the appropriate time, you will know.

On why it took long for the CBN governor to be suspended, he said:
“People raised all kinds of issues that the suspension will affect the economy. When you are dealing with the treasury of the nation, you have to consult widely and take the necessary steps to ensure that it does not affect the economy. One little thing and if issues bordering on the capital market are not taken carefully, it can bring the economy down especially when the Central Bank is involved. When the financial statement was sent to me, I had to send the report to the FRC to seek their opinion. Even if I am the best accountant in the world, I still have to consult widely. It went back and forth. The first report that came to me, issues were raised. Then based on the issues raised, I raised a query to the CBN governor. Of course, the CBN governor now wrote back and I sent it back again to the FRC telling them the response of the CBN governor. It took them time, but what quickly made me to rush to take that decision? By now, the 2013 audit report ought to be published.

One of the things we had to do to stabilise the economy was to send the name of the next CBN governor to the Senate even though the tenure of Sanusi will expire in June in order to tell the international community that we have a succession plan. At any time, if they are through, Sanusi can even come back as CBN governor. So, we want to assure the international community that the succession plan will not affect the economy. It is quite a sensitive thing and you must handle it with care. I really want to use this opportunity to advise people. President Jonathan is a Nigerian, Sanusi is a Nigerian and having been governor of the CBN, he must have stepped on toes.”
