UNILAG’s management (University of Lagos), has debunked rumors of plans to review upwards the fees being paid by students, adding that tuition fee for students is free. The management of the Nigerian University, further disclosed that Fresh and returning students are however expected to pay obligatory fees. A student of the University of Lagos has suffered a horrible misfortune after going for a night out. A Punch Metro report has shown that serious tragedy has stuck at the Moremi Hall of the University of Lagos after a Chemistry Education student, identified simply as Tope, slumped and died at the institution’s medical centre. Sources in UNILAG said the student, who was squatting in the hostel, died shortly after returning from an outing with a man.

Six UNILAG Students charged with rape of 17-yr-old school mate

Six students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), who allegedly gang-raped their 17-year-old female school mate, were arraigned yesterday before a Surulere Chief Magistrate’s Court. UNILAG Threatens To Embark On Local Strike

According to the Tribune Newspaper, the chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Lagos chapter, Dr Adelaja Odukoya, has said his members would be left with no choice, but to embark on strike, if the institution’s management fails to implement the agreements reached with the union.

A 24-year-old, Olaoluwa Oluwadara, has bagged a Ph.D degree in Mathematics at the just concluded 2012/2013 session convocation ceremony at the University of Lagos.

Olaoluwa, who bagged his first and second degrees in  Mathematics and Physics  in 2007 and 2008 respectively from the Universite de Bangui in Central African Republic, graduated with a Cummulative Gross Point Average (CGPA) of 5.0 [first degree].

Olaoluwa’s feat supersedes that of Olabisi Adeyemi, a 26-year-old female who bagged a Ph.D with a CGPA of 4.98 in 2012 and Opeyemi Shodipe, 25 of Babcock University.

While speaking during the convocation, the Vice Chancellor of UNILAG, Professor Rahmon Bello, appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan  to urgently intervene in the resolution of the over 10-month strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics and the Academic Staff Union of Colleges of Education of Nigeria (ASUCEON).

He appealed to the Federal Government to consider the demands of the striking lecturers to ensure that students of the polyechnics and colleges of education resumed their suspended academic work.

This, Rahman said was “In the interest of our students and to stem the falling standard of education and the increasingly degenerating infrastructure facilities worsened by the insurgency of Boko Haram.”

He also emphatised with the Federal Government as well as the President on having to deal with the Boko Haram insurgency, praying for a quick resolution and return of the Chibok school girls that were abducted in April.

The vice chancellor further charged Nigerians on the need to support the Federal government and proffer some home grown solutions to the issue of insecurity in the country “which seems to be hydra-headed and growing like a wild fire.”

The institution’s Governing Council chairman, Professor Jerry Gana, while speaking assured that the name: University of Lagos would remain same just as the former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon GCFR, stated on Tuesday, adding that the name itsekd is a source of pride. It would be recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan, in 2012, made an announcement to change the name of the institution to Moshood Abiola University, this decision was met with a protests and criticisms from many quarters and is currently pending at the National House of Assembly.

In his address, President Jonathan, who is also the visitor to the university, represented by the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Julius Okojie, reiterated the federal government’s pledge to work towards improving the education sector in Nigeria by turning the “brain drain in the Nigeria to a brain gain.”

He charged the 9,729 graduating students on the need work harder and equip themselves with the skills to be successful and relevant on this 21st century as, “with every convocation, the future of our nation is assured.”

University Of Lagos (UNILAG) Campus Shut Down By Students

 

Students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have blocked entrances to the school this morning, preventing vehicular movements in or outside of the campus in protest against tuition fee hike.

The students are protesting against the sudden imposition of course registration fee.
The protesting students claimed the management shut the school portal against registration and began demanding for N10,000, which again increased to N15,000 and N20,000 progressively in the last few days..

One of the protest leaders told Saharareporters that poor technical capability of students’ portal and the attitude of the personnel at the institution’s IT center  caused delay in students registration for a new semester.

 

The students are singing protest songs, accusing the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rahman Bello of corruption.
They said the ban on their Students Union, since 2005 will not hinder them from protest action against oppressive policies of the school management.

“If they do not immediately re-open the portal for registration”, one of the protesting students said, “this will be a springboard to demand lifting the unacceptable ban on the students’ union government.”

Jonathan:UNILAG should remain UNILAG

President Goodluck Jonathan has agreed that the University of Lagos should keep its identity pending the resolution of the National Assembly on the controversial name change.

Jonathan had on June 12, 2012 announced the change of the institution’s nomenclature from University of Lagos to Moshood Abiola University, leading to a protest. The move also led to a court case, forcing the Federal Government to back down on the plan, with a request to the National Assembly to amend the law setting up the institution. The decision of the president was made known exclusively to the Nigerian Tribune by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Rahman Bello, when the management of the newspaper paid him a courtesy visit. He further revealed that Jonathan had decided to leave the final decision on the name change to the National Assembly, since it was an Act of Parliament that established the university.

According to him, Jonathan had agreed that the law should take its full course as regards the issue. “Unilag is the first university in Nigeria to be established by an Act of Parliament. And that is what the president has agreed to take its course,” Bello said. He added that the proposed name change had been sent to the National Assembly and whatever the decision House took would be final. “So, we are waiting for that. For now, the status quo remains. We remain the University of Lagos,” the vice chancellor said. He also revealed that the university was set to commence with the new session, a Bachelor of Arts degree course in the Chinese Language. Noting that Unilag was the first to introduce the degree in Africa, Bello said the decision was borne out of the need to satisfy the growing Chinese influence in Nigeria and the world generally. “There is hardly anywhere you go today without seeing one or two Chinese companies around. Since they are here with us, we must be able to take advantage and partake in the businesses as well. “So, by offering a degree in Chinese studies, those that we will train will be able to understand the Chinese Language and culture better and be able to inter-relate between them and Nigerians and be relevant in whatever businesses the Chinese operate here,” Bello stated.
