Full Nominees List for ZAFAA Awards 2013

PREAMBLE
In recent years, the African entertainment industry has metamorphosed rather rapidly into a veritable competitor in the showbiz world. One of the most evident examples of this is the ever-increasing popularity of this black African country. It has become a Mecca of sorts to highly rated foreign musicians – who hitherto, were only seen on our television sets, performing alongside our local artists. For instance, in the past four years or thereabouts, the oil-rich West African country has played host to worldly acclaimed rappers such as 50 Cent, Wyclef Jean and Ludacris, to mention a few. This is a positive development, signifying the interpenetration of globalisation.
However, the country's achievements in the music sector could be seen asthe tip of the iceberg when compared to the movie industry. In turn, the African movie industry in comparison to its counterparts could be said to be the fastest growing emerging market. This no doubt, is a colossal achievement, bearing in mind that the first movie was produced barely fifteen years ago. It is therefore not surprising that after household names like Hollywood (the American movie industry) and Bollywood (the Indianmovie industry), the Nigerian "Nollywood" is considered next in line for recognition.
The African Film Festival and Academy Awards (also known as ZAFAA) is a highly regarded and anticipated film event within the African communities and has already become a part of the UK's annual cultural calendar. Through ZAFAA Global Awards UK, the African film plans to rebrand its movie industry with the intention of re-launching itself into the international movie market on the same level as other global movie industries.
AT A GLANCE
NOLLYWOOD ENTERTAINMENT LIMITED UK, NIGERIA TELEVISION AUTHORITY INTERNATIONAL (NTAI), ZAFAA GLOBAL AWARDS UK AND NIGERIA TELEVISION AUTHORITY (NTA) are jointly organising ZAFAA Global Awards this year.
As the name depicts, NOLLYWOOD ENTERTAINMENT LIMITED (NEL) is a showbiz-oriented organisation, which has a bias for the promotion of the African entertainment industry as a whole. The body of the organisation intends to achieve this goal through fully organised participation in all spheres of the industry. However, the primary objectiveis to help in the promotion of our culture and above all, serve as a worthy ambassador of Africa.
ZAFAA Global Awards Limited UK was registered as an entertainment promotion company. Their ambition is to develop talents and bring them to stardom, as well as promoting artists in all aspects of entertainment. This is evident in the various UK ZAFAA Global Awards held over six years and counting.
ZAFAA Global Awards is an annual event that stands shoulder to shoulder with other reputable foreign awards such as the American Oscar, the British BAFTA and Indian Bollywood Movie Awards. It attempts to recognise African filmmakers, actors and other contributing personalities in the Diaspora. ZAFAA's main aim therefore, is to promote African movies and culture, as well as compliment African artists with their foreign counterparts.
TROPHY
"Our Trophy is Our Pride and the Symbol of our Belief"
ZAFAA Global trophies are made by the same company that produce the Oscar and BAFTA trophies; the quality is made, such that artists who receive it should be proud of their work as well as the benefits that come with it. Artists generally should be rewarded in accordance with their efforts in the industry, inspiring newcomers to reach the same goals.
THE EVENT
ZAFAA brings leading international actors, actresses, filmmakers, movie industry professionals and the international media together with the sole purpose of showcasing the best African Cinema has to offer to the Western world, to a large public audience in London. This prestigious event will be held from the 14th to the 16th of November.
Two days will be used to project the diversity of African films, tourism and rich cultural heritage at the Greenwich Odeon Cinema Bugsby Way, London SE10, while the awards night will be held at THE KIA OVAL KENNINGTON, LONDON, SE11 5SS.
AWARDS
This is being organised in honour of African filmmakers who have contributed to the development and progress of the African film industry over the years in diverse ways, as well as to reward those who have been outstanding in their roles in films during the year 2012/2013, either on thecontinent or in the Diaspora.
"ZAFAA Global Award is the biggest African entertainment event outside of Africa."
FILM SEMINAR
This seminar is run by accomplished African filmmakers, lecturers, seasoned filmmakers and home entertainment experts. It will treat modern film techniques and current filming trends, amongst others, to the large array of African film stars who will be present for this all-important educative seminar. In addition, it will be a forum that will offer much needed impetus for creative exchange and discussion among filmmakers.
CULTURE AND TOURISM
This will include the exhibition of cultural activities and tourist potentials in participating States, especially the States that have annual activities, with the potential of attracting tourists and investors to the economic strength of the African State. Examples of this are the Abuja Nigeria Carnival, the Calabar Annual Carnival, the Lagos State Boat Regatta and the Eyo Festival as well as many others from other African countries. These are events that would attract international tourists and investors just like the annual Notting Hill Gate Carnival that is usually held in the UK every last weekend of August.
