Yaya Toure beats Mikel Obi, Victor Moses to win 2013 BBC African Footballer of the Year

Ivorian footballer Yaya Toure has been picked ahead of Nigeria’s John Obi Mikel and Victor Moses as the 2013 BBC African Footballer of the Year. ‘I think I’ve been nominated for five years in a row and finally winning the award is amazing. I’m very happy as it is the fans who have given it to me – so I’m very appreciative’, the Manchester City FC midfielder told BBC Sport.

Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Rennes winger Jonathan Pitroipa were the two other nominees for this year’s award. 44 football experts from across Africa were chosen to look into account each players’ skill, technical ability, teamwork, consistency and fair play when making their decisions. Fans were also given the opportunity to have their say on the winner online and by text message.
