The singer, who took Nigerians by surprise when he switched from secular hip-hop/R&B genres to gospel music, said he had to strive hard to get the embrace of gospel artistes, churches, and the general gospel sub-sector of the music industry.
Speaking to a NET reporter, he said, 'Christians are very difficult to convince, and I don't mean that in a bad way. I really don't blame anybody because I think it takes a while to get into the role of being a minister of music in gospel.'
According to him, it wasn't until after 2 gospel albums that they (the Christian community) started taking him seriously.
He added, 'I even had an occasion where the youth of a particular church invited me to come and minister at a church and when the pastor heard, he said "On my altar? Obiwon? Never!" These were some of the early challenges until I started getting accepted.'
Obiwon recently released his sophomore gospel record, 'Gold Water', and he's shooting videos for some of the singles from the project.
