Grandma Survivor of Lagos Collapsed Building Dies In Hospital

Residents of Swamp Street in Lagos Island where a three storey building collapsed on Wednesday trapping people wailed uncontrollably yesterday when the news of the death of 82-year-old grandma, Alhaja Misturat Amodu, one of the five survivors filtered into the community. It gathered that the octogenarian died at the Lagos Island General Hospital after she was rescued from the collapsed building. It was learnt that efforts by doctors at the Lagos Island General Hospital to save her life from the injury she sustained on her thigh and other parts of her body proved abortive, as she reportedly died afterwards.

The daughter of the deceased, Alhaja Fatimah and her husband, Alhaji Tajudeen Ishola who confirmed her death said that the deceased died at about 5 pm after regaining her consciousness. According to Tajudeen the octogenarian regained consciousness and demanded for water, adding that their hopes were rekindled only for her to die few minutes after taking lucozade boost. “She spoke with us around 4pm. She said she was thirsty and a doctor told us to go and buy lucozade boost which she drank. We were preparing to do the X-ray on her thigh when everything changed. She died at about 5pm. She was well taken care of at the hospital. Mama hailed from Ilorin and she was 82 years old. Fatimah Ishola, daughter of the late octogenarian, who also sustained injury said that she does not know how she was rescued from the collapsed building, saying “It was God that rescued me.”

She said: “I live on the first floor. I was in the bathroom while Mama was in the room when the building collapsed and I heard someone saying a section of the building has collapsed. “While trying to take my cloth to check the section of the building that caved in, the entire building collapsed on me. “While trying to escape, some of the rubbles that were hanging started dropping. I didn’t know where the entrance was. The entire house was dark. I was just reciting a section of the Koran calling on Allah for help. Later, I discovered that a section of the building opened, so I crawl out of the building.” Counting their losses, the occupants lamented that property lost was worth million of naira, saying “we couldn’t remove anything.” An occupant, Mrs. Fatimah Ishola, lamented that aside losing her mother, she also lost property worth millions of naira.
