91-yr-old Man Beaten Up, Set ablaze by Burglar

A 91-year-old man died in a horrific burglary attack after a suspect beat him up, poured gasoline on him and set his Detroit home on fire. Paul Monchnik, a retired TV repairman, was found dead in his burning home in the 20500 block of Bentler Court at around 3 a.m. on Monday.

According to police the suspect stole the victim's 2000 silver Chevrolet van. The stolen van's license plate is CNU1721. A preliminary investigation suggests that the burglar could have set the fire in an effort to cover his tracks, the paper reported. His son said, Scott Monchnik, 56, has asked for the public's help to track down the suspect and help 'get this scum off the streets'.

He told The Detroit Free Press: "Anybody that can help get this scum off the street, please come forward, and please help. Nobody deserves to be treated the way this punk treated my dad. He [my dad] lived by himself; he was nearly deaf, so he lived in his own little world and got along in his own little world very comfortably." Detroit police are looking for a suspect who was caught on surveillance camera buying gasoline at a nearby gas station.
