Baby Buhari Dauda, whose genitals were cut off by his stepmother in Niger State, is dead.
Dauda died in Wada village, in the Shiroro Local Government Area of the state, after a brief illness.
The Director General of the Child Rights Agency, Mariam Kolo, who confirmed the development to PUNCH Metro on Wednesday, said the baby had malaria which made his temperature to rise, adding that he died despite taking prescribed drugs for the sickness.
Kolo said the victim had been slated for a genital transplant in the United Kingdom before he died.
She said the sickness was not a relapse of his earlier medical condition as he had been doing well after going through a series of corrective surgeries.
Kolo expressed sadness at the death of the baby.
The DG said efforts were ongoing to ensure that advice was given speedily on the death and the case of the stepmother, who had been remanded in the Old Minna Prison.
She said the state Governor, Abubakar Bello, and his wife, were devastated by the news of Dauda’s death as they had planned to contribute to the transplant.
On June 18, 2016, Dauda, who was two-month-old at the time, lost his genitals after a savage attack by his 17-year-old stepmother, Bara’atu Rabiu.
Rabiu, who cut off the genitals, did not give any reason for her action.
The state government had stepped in to salvage the situation and was planning corrective surgeries for the victim when he died.
