The Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries have made history as the first church to win the Church World Cup.
The tournament which is the brain child of The John Paul II Foundation For Sports, ended yesterday, Sunday, December 14 with the Nigerian representative emerging as the first winners.
The Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries Football Club trashed the United Church of Colombia by seven goals to win the inaugural Church World Cup in Goa, India.
A hat trick from striker, Adekunle Adegboyega, a brace from Nelson Kenedinum and one goal each from Sheriff Alashe and Sikiru Olatunbosun to sink their Colombian counterparts to win the inaugural Church World Cup. The MFM team also ended the competition without conceding a goal and scored a whopping 20 goals in five games.
The team also snagged some individual awards as Adegboyega won the top scorer award with eight goals and diminutive midfielder while Onuwa Emmanuel was voted the Most Valuable Player of the competition. The participating teams were host, India, Colombia, Egypt, Brazil, Nigeria, Ghana, Uzbekistan and Portugal.
The General Overseer of the church, Dr. Daniel Olukoya, praised the boys for their history making performance and promised a befitting welcome for them on return to Nigeria tomorrow.
“The boys have made Nigeria and Africa very proud. I am really happy that this feat was achieved by footballers, who are ambassadors from MFM, they have made us proud in faraway India. As a church, we will appreciate them,” the clergy said.
