The 31-year-old who looked more like surplus to requirement at the West-London club has signed a one and half year deal with the Italian club.
Essien will be looking at earning a shirt in his country's team for the 2014 world cup in Brazil.
The midfielder cited the greatness of the club and new coach Clarence Seedorf as reasons why he chose the club, when he said;
'Milan are a great club'. 'I've joined the Rossoneri after having spoken to Seedorf. I hope he becomes a great coach'.
He also thanked his former team and coach for allowing him go to Milan and promised to do his best for his new club. 'I would like to thank the [Chelsea] president and team and also [manager Jose] Mourinho, who has allowed me to wear this red and black shirt. I will do my best for Milan',
he concluded.
He becomes Milan's third signing of the January (winter) transfer after the arrival of Japanese playmaker Keisuke Honda from Russian club CSKA Moscow and French defender Adil Rami from Valencia.

AC Milan CEO Galliani to stand down next month
The 69-year-old has revealed that he will resign from his position in the near future, signalling the end of an era at San siro
Adriano Galliani has announced that he plans to stand down as AC Milan CEO after the Serie A side's final Champions League group game, at home to Ajax on December 11.
The 69-year-old had come under fire in recent months following the Rossoneri's disappointing start to the season and a number of reports had already suggested that he was ready to throw in the towel after falling out with board member Barbara Berlusconi, daughter of club owner Silvio.
Galliani has now confirmed that he will indeed resign, although he has voiced his frustration with the way things have gone in the past few weeks.
"I will resign in the next few days, probably after the match against Ajax," Galliani told reporters on Friday. "I will leave the club either with or without compensation.
"I understand that there comes a moment where it's time for change, but not like this. My reputation has been damaged. This should have been treated a bit more delicately.
"I don't know yet how my future will look like. I will take some time off first and then I will make a decision."
Galliani had been Milan CEO ever since 1986 and saw the San Siro giants win five European Cups during his tenure, as well as eight Serie A titles.
