Seventeen people in northwest Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have died from Ebola, the health ministry said on Tuesday, describing the fresh outbreak as a “public health emergency with international impact.”

FAAN restores Ebola screening points at Airports

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has restored screening points and detecting machines at the airport to prevent the reappearance of Ebola outbreak in Nigeria. This is coming after the outbreak of Ebola in Democratic Republic of Congo.

Fear in Congo as Ebola Virus Leaves Three People Dead

People are scampering to safety in the Democratic Republic of Congo over new cases of Ebola virus that has killed three people recently. The World Health Organisation on Monday confirmed the second Ebola case in the Democratic Republic of Congo. “So far, there are 19 suspected cases, including three deaths and two lab-confirmed cases,” a WHO spokesperson in Geneva said via an e-mail. The first case was confirmed on Friday in Bas-Uele province in the north-east. The WHO has said the outbreak appears to be limited to that remote area, and that there is no need for travel restrictions for the time being.

Ebola Allegedly Returns to Nigeria, 1 Dies, 10 Quarantined

Ebola Virus Disease has allegedly returned to Nigeria. The University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), has quarantined ten persons following the death of a patient in the hospital, Wednesday, from symptoms suspected to be Ebola virus. Chairman of Medical Advisory Committee of the hospital, Dr. Queeneth Kalu, who made the revelation, Thursday, in Calabar, Cross River State, said blood samples have been sent to the Ebola Diagnosing Centre in Benin, Edo State.

Ebola Virus Lingers 6months in Semen of Survivors - WHO

The World Health Organization, WHO, has advised all male survivors of Ebola to be tested three months after the onset of symptoms and then monthly until they know they have no risk of passing on the virus through their semen. Bruce Aylward, Head of the WHO’s Ebola Response, said on Thursday in Geneva that isolated flare-ups of Ebola may point to a higher risk of transmission via the semen of male survivors than previously thought.

Nigerian Soldier Cured Of Ebola in Netherlands

The Dutch public health institute, RIVM, said in a statement yesterday, that a Nigerian UN peacekeeper infected with Ebola and brought to the Netherlands for treatment has been cured. In their words,

“The Nigerian patient who was admitted on December 6 has been cured of Ebola,” 

The soldier was infected while working as a peacekeeper battling the deadly disease in Liberia.

Mali Confirms Second Death from Ebola

Mali has recorded a second death caused by Ebola Virus Disease, as a nurse has died of the disease. Officials say the nurse had treated a man who arrived from Guinea at the Pasteur Clinic in Bamako, and the clinic was now in quarantine.

Ebola: Two Nigerians Test Positive!

Going by the reports, 2 Nigerians, a 27-year-old indigene of Abia State and a 22-year-old indigene of Edo State, have tested postive to the Ebola Virus. Both of them reside in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The minister of state for health, Dr Khaliru Alhassan, disclosed this at the just-concluded National Council on Health Meeting, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom. Panic In Lagos As Another Ebola Victim Arrives From Sierra Leone!

There was serious panic at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos on Wednesday as a Nigerian, who had contacted Ebola Virus Disease in Sierra Leone arrived aboard Royal Air Maroc. The ebola victim, Theophilus Onnakhinon, was flown from Sierra Leone by the airline while his younger brother, Chinedu Eroka, was said to have absconded from the Sierra Leonean authorities. It was not however clear why Eroka absconded. A source close to the Port Health at the Lagos Airport confided in aviation reporters that the victim had been treated of Ebola virus in Sierra Leone and cured of the disease by the health authorities of that country after some weeks in their custody.
