This 'Miracle' Boy Beat Terminal Cancer With No Treatment At All


Dubbed the miracle child, a little boy with an aggressive form of cancer who was told he had just months to live has started to beat the disease - by himself. Brave Julian Malankowska, eight, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia when he was two and despite overcoming it three times was told by doctors last June it has returned and there was nothing more they could do. But now Julian, who medics have called a “one in seven billion case”, is seemingly defying all odds and his blood results are slowly improving of their own accord.

At Last, Scientists Discover Miracle Gel That Kills Cancer Tumours


A groundbreaking research has churned out a biodegradable gel that has the capacity to kill cancer tumours. Created by scientists at the Department of Cancer Immunology and Virology Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA, the gel was designed to deliver immunotherapy directly to the area from which a cancerous has been surgically removed. Senior study author Michael Goldberg and colleagues recently reported their results in the journal Science Translational Medicine. Upon testing the gel on mice during the surgical removal of breast cancer tumours, the scientists found that it not only helped to prevent tumour recurrence at the primary site, but that it also eliminated secondary tumours in the lungs.

Monkeypox victim loses pregnancy


Miss Wuese Aloo, the suspected monkey pox victim in Benue State, has lost her four-month-old pregnancy. This was confirmed at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi. Wuese said she contracted the disease from her lorry-driver boyfriend, who is nowhere to be found. He occasionally bring goods to Gboko.

The Federal Ministry of Health has listed foods Nigerians must avoid in other not to contract the monkey pox disease. According to FG foods like monkey meat, bushmeat and meat from dead animals must be avoided.This list was given by Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, via a statement by the Director, Media and Public Relations in the ministry, Mrs. Boade Akinola, on Thursday. . It was also revealed that the disease neither had a cure nor a vaccine, noting, however, it is a mild and there should be no cause for alarm. The statement read in part, “He (Adewole) said the virus was mild and there was no known treatment and no preventive vaccines, hence the public should be at alert and avoid crowded places as much as possible. .

Deadly Monkeypox hits Bayelsa; doctor, others quarantined


Fear has gripped the residents of Bayelsa State as a deadly viral epidemic known as “monkeypox” has broken out in the state. According to the World Health Organisation, monkeypox is a rare disease that occurs primarily in remote parts of Central and West Africa, near tropical rainforests. “The monkeypox virus can cause a fatal illness in humans and, although it is similar to human smallpox which has been eradicated, it is much milder,” WHO says. It was authoritatively learnt that a medical doctor and 10 persons who came down with the monkeypox had been quarantined in an isolation centre at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri, in Yenagoa Local Government Area of the state.

The world is running out of Antibiotics – WHO report confirms

Antibacterial agents in clinical development – an analysis of the antibacterial clinical development pipeline, including tuberculosis, launched today by WHO shows a serious lack of new antibiotics under development to combat the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance. Most of the drugs currently in the clinical pipeline are modifications of existing classes of antibiotics and are only short-term solutions. The report found very few potential treatment options for those antibiotic-resistant infections identified by WHO as posing the greatest threat to health, including drug-resistant tuberculosis which kills around 250 000 people each year. "Antimicrobial resistance is a global health emergency that will seriously jeopardize progress in modern medicine," says Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO. "There is an urgent need for more investment in research and development for antibiotic-resistant infections including TB, otherwise we will be forced back to a time when people feared common infections and risked their lives from minor surgery."

Cooking ‘Moi-moi’ In Nylons Dangerous, Expert Warns


A dietician, Mr John Tehinse, has warned people against cooking moi-moi and other foods in nylons or cellophane bags as it produced dioxins, a toxic substance that causes cancer. Tehinse gave the warning on Tuesday in Ilorin at an awareness campaign on food safety organised by the Food Safety Awareness Campaign Initiatives, funded by the European Union. Moin-moin is a Nigerian steamed bean pudding made from a mixture of washed and peeled black-eyed peas, onions and fresh ground peppers.

Cholera Outbreak Spreads In Borno Killed 20 People


About 20 people at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in Borno State have been confirmed death following the outbreak of cholera in the state. Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) put suspected cases at 319. Via a statement, yesterday, NCDC revealed that about six areas in the state, with Muna Garage IDP camp, on the outskirts of the capital, Maiduguri, have been affected by the disease. Following the confirmation of the disease finding its way into the state, it was disclosed that NCDC has deployed a Rapid Response Team to support the state Ministry of Health in coordination, contact identification, tracing and laboratory investigation as well as case management.

Viral Hepatitis kill many in Nasarawa


Five people reportedly lost their lives to a disease suspected to be viral hepatitis, which broke out in Marhai community in the Wamba Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. Viral hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. According to doctors, the disease spreads in different ways, including through sex, sharing of needles and the consumption of unclean food. One of the members of the community, who spoke to Punch on condition of anonymity, said that quite a number of their people lost their lives to the illness.

LUTH Discharges Three Doctors Infected With Lassa Fever.


Two doctors infected with Lassa fever and receiving treatment at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, have been discharged. Lassa Fever: Ogun Places 106 Under Surveillance


The Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye, has said that the number of the people who had contact with a victim of Lassa fever in the state has increased from 66 to 106 as of last Friday. He disclosed this on Sunday in a telephone interview with a Punch correspondent. The commissioner said additional 40 contacts had been identified between Friday and Sunday and they were being monitored. He, however, appealed to the residents not to panic over the outbreak of the disease, as measures were being taken to contain its spread. A 22-year-old male patient was on Thursday placed under medical observation at the State Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta over Lassa fever infection.

3 More LUTH Staff Test Positive For Lassa Fever

Three out of the 100 health workers that came in contact with a pregnant woman who died of Lassa fever at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, have tested positive for the infection.


LUTH’s Chief Medical Director, Prof. Chris Bode, confirmed this at a joint briefing by the hospital’s management and officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Health on Wednesday.

Cholera outbreak in Kwara- 17 confirmed dead


Seventeen people have been confirmed dead in 1,617 reported suspected cases as a cholera outbreak continues to ravage Kwara State in North-central Nigeria. The figures were made known by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in its weekly epidemiological report for Week 26 released on Tuesday.
