5 Things That Will Happen If Google Shuts Down for A Day

For many users of Google, the search engine giant will always be available online. It is near impossible for it to shut down many will argue. This is because many people rely heavily on Google to do a lot of things. But do you know that Google did shut down in the past? In August 2013, Google and all of its services came down for two to three minutes. Internet traffic as a whole went down by a massive 40 percent. A similar incident occurred in May 2009. Not for a day, but for a few minutes. So, if Google goes down for a day what will likely happen? Jumia Travel shares five of these things.

Dorobucci, #BringBackOurGirls, Patience Jonathan top Nigerian Google trends in May 2014

That time of the month is here again, and as usual, Google has shared their search trend stats for Nigeria, and here is what it looks like for the month of May.

The Mavin single, ‘Dorobucci’, has taken over the Nigerian airwaves, but if you are a fan of the song, I am pretty sure you have wondered what the word “dorobucci” means, Apparently, millions around the country are too to the point where it was the most “googled” topic for the month of May.

The #bringbackourgirls campaign also got to the top list as it remains the biggest kidnap in the world, according to CNN. 276 female students were kidnapped Boko Haram, an Islamic Jihadist and Takfiri terrorist from the Government Secondary School in the town of Chibok in Borno State, Nigeria and have been missing for over over 57 days.Though over 40 girls have been reported to have escaped, the search for the remaining girls —and the Nigerian government’s lagging response—has sparked both local and global outcries. Nigerians and the whole world is still on a look out to bring back these girls.
Other topic that made it to the Google top search list is the speech by Patience Jonathan,  Jos bomb blast which claimed many lives and the death of American poet Maya Angelou who died at age 86.

Google to build self-driving cars

Google is to start building its own self-driving cars, rather than modifying vehicles built by other manufacturers. The car will have a stop-go button but no controls, steering wheel or pedals.
Google-Self-Driving-car
Pictures of the Google vehicle show it looks like a city car with a “friendly” face, designed to make it seem non-threatening and help people accept self-driving technology.Co-founder Sergey Brin revealed the plans at a conference in California.

“We’re really excited about this vehicle – it’s something that will allow us to really push the capabilities of self driving technology, and understand the limitations,” said Chris Urmson, director of the company’s self-driving project.
He added that the cars had the ability to “improve people’s lives by transforming mobility”.But some researchers working in this field are investigating potential downsides to driverless car technology.
They believe they could make traffic and urban sprawl worse, as people accept longer commutes as they do not have to drive themselves.
Flexible windscreen
The BBC was given access to the Google team to talk about the secret project, and see early renderings of the car.It looks almost cartoon-like, it has no traditional bonnet at the front, and the wheels are pushed to the corners.
It will seat two people, propulsion will be electric, and at the start it will be limited to 25mph (40km/h) to help ensure safety. The most significant thing about the design is that it does not have any controls, apart from a stop/go button.
For early testing, extra controls will be fitted so one of Google’s test drivers can take over if there is a problem. The controls will simply plug in, and Mr Urmson believes that over time, as confidence in the technology grows, they will be removed entirely.
The front end of the vehicle is designed to be safer for pedestrians, with a soft foam-like material where a traditional bumper would be, and a more flexible windscreen, which may help reduce injuries. The vehicle will use a combination of laser and radar sensors along with camera data to drive autonomously.
It will depend on Google’s road maps, built specifically for the programme, and tested on the company’s current fleet of vehicles.

Google joins Instagram, overtakes Apple as world’s most valuable brand

Google-on-Instagram
In the last few years, Google has gone into overdrive while Apple spends more of its time rejecting ‘masturbation apps’ and pulling ‘weed games’ from their app store. Google this week joined Instagram, expanding their presence on the internet. Four days after joining the online photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking service, the account has gained over 44,000 followers. Meanwhile, Google has surpassed Apple as the most valuable brand in the world after three years at the top, a new survey says. According to Millward Brown’s ‘BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands’ ranking, Apple’s brand value fell by 20pc in the past year to just under $148bn, conceding the spot to Google, whose value increased by 40pc to $159bn Another tech force Facebook’s brand value rose 68pc to around $36bn, putting it 21st in the rankings Buy Cheap Android Phones on Konga.com | Lowest Price in Nigeria

Check Out How Google's New $1 Million Robot Sees The World [PHOTOS]

A team of roboticists at MIT is preparing Atlas, a 6-foot-2-inch-tall, 330-pound humanoid robot that can climb stairs, open doors, and even drive a car, for competition in the DARPA Robotics Challenge at the end of 2014.

Atlas is built by Boston Dynamics, the robotics company bought by Google last December, and there are only eight of them in the world. The DARPA Challenge is a "robot Olympics" — robots are asked to do things like climb a ladder, or connect a firehose to a standpipe and turn on the valve. These tasks are designed to test a robotic system's "mobility, manipulation, dexterity, perception, and operator control mechanisms." A robot that can't make sense of its world in real time would never be able to do these things. Here's how Atlas' sensor systems rise to the challenge.

A robot that can't make sense of its world in real time would never be able to do these things. Here's how Atlas' sensor systems rise to the challenge.

In the demo, Atlas was given instructions to find the piece of wood and pick it up.

This is the operator's view, where you give the robot its instructions. A number of monitors provide feedback on what Atlas can see and detect.
Here's what Atlas sees from the spinning "lidar" unit in its head. Lidar (that's light detection and ranging) is an imaging system that makes sense of an environment by bouncing lasers off it and analyzing how they reflect back. It's essentially a very precise rangefinder that operates in three dimensions.

Note the yellow and green "footprints" on the screen — this is Atlas determining where to place its feet in order to approach that steel beam:
Atlas has two stereo proximity cameras ("for situational awareness") and a third camera in its head angled slightly downward. This is a composite image of what the robot "sees" by way of its three cameras.
These systems come together to make it possible for the robot to perform environment-dependent tasks, like identifying the piece of wood it was told to pick up and stooping down to grab it.
Success!
