Wole Soyinka blasts Obasanjo in new book ‘“I dare you to meet me one-on-one..’

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has advised former President Olusegun Obasanjo to desist from struggling to restore Nigeria to the path of sanity and moderate rectitude, describing him as ‘objectively unfitted’ for the role. He urged him to instead head for a monastery.

Professor Wole Soyinka was keynote speaker at the maiden annual lecture of the Ripples Centre for Data and Investigative Journalism held in Lagos on March 15. Topic: “Rebuilding Trust in a Divided Nigeria: Can Nigeria be fixed?” The Nobel Laureate did not disappoint. His presentation titled “From Miyetti to Haiti: Notes from a Solidarity Visit” took us on a journey to Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, the United States, Nigeria also, and other parts of the world, including the past and the present, raising questions along the line about the humanity of the average Nigerian – the leaders, the followers - his or her humanity or non-humanity, the possession of a sense of dignity, shame, decency, memory, common sense, or lack of it, in comparison with conditions elsewhere.

Prof. Soyinka attacks Buhari over fuel scarcity

Professor Wole Soyinka has called on the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to end the current fuel scarcity in the country rather than buying time and passing blame.

The playwright said this in a statement he entitled, “Blame passing: The New Year Gift to a Nation,’’

 “I recently ran the gauntlet of petroleum queues through three conveniently situated cities – Lagos, Abeokuta and Ibadan – deliberately, this Friday. Even with ‘unorthodox’ aids of passage, this was no task for the faint-hearted.“Just getting past fueling stations was traumatising, an obstacle race through seething, frustrated masses of humanity, only to find ourselves on vast stretches of emptied roads pleading for occupation. As for obtaining the petroleum in the first place – the less said the better.

Highly respected Nigerian Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, said he ought to have died going by his lifestyle. This was the shocking response by the 83 year-old professor of literature and political activist to a question by the Financial Times of London, on how long he intends to live. “By all logic I should not be alive right now because of my lifestyle,” he replied. “I flout everything they teach at medical school, including the fact that I don’t drink water. I eat only when I want to. I don’t obey the rules of cholesterol,” he added during the conversation with David Pilling, the FT Africa editor, at the Pescatori restaurant in west London. Soyinka, gulped in between his meal, a bottle of Arneis Langhe wine valued at £45 and two glasses of another wine Montepulciano valued at £27.80. Even though Soyinka indulges himself with wine, he is by his own admission a non-smoker, an indulgence that could have created a possible health problem for him.
